Jungle Beads are a webbed impact product!

1. Made from recyclables, the Jungle Beads jewelry line is part of the LiA CAN! program's Recycling for Peace campaign, that exposes LiA members to a range of ways to add value to items that others might throw away. Each unique Jungle Bead is made in a multi-stage process from a triangular strip of paper (magazines, old calendars and posters, or cereal boxes) that is carefully rolled, coated with many layers of varnish, and then strung into stunning jewelry designs.

2. Community building occurs whenever a group goes through a learning process together. Learning to make Jungle Beads well involves a lot of trial and error, particularly with Life in Africa's high quality control standards in place for finished jewelry items.  During bead making & stringing sessions at Life in Africa's WE Centers, members also hear presentations on a variety of learning topics and engage in structured dialogue on community issues and household challenges they face in common. At the end of the month, everyone who participates gets paid.

3. Family income generation follows from learning new skills. LiA CAN! producers have worked together to develop a price list for how much they receive as a group for each finished item. Each member who participates in Jungle Beads production earns points for the time they spend, and the total value of what the group has produced is divided according to the number of points each member has earned. 10% of every member's monthly earnings is set aside as savings, which is paid out to the member when the saved amount reaches shs100,000 ($65).

4. Community funding for member programs and services the producers want is included in Life in Africa's retail price of every Jungle Bead Jewelry item sold. Assistance educating the HIV/AIDS and war orphans who are dependent on LiA member families is currently the community's most pressing need.
